My experience with open cell (/honeycomb) bug sponges is that when I use them the bugs get off the paint and into the sponge. After removing the bugs from the paint, I'm not able to rinse them out of the sponge. Eventually, the sponge ends up with lots of bugs in it.

With wheels that haven't been cleaned for many miles (thousands), I often find that there is stubborn brake dust that I have trouble removing.
