I do not know what part of coatings makes them last longer than waxes and sealants (a lot longer for some coatings).

My guess would be either:
  1. They are more resistant to weather, uv, acids, and other things that break down waxes and sealants
  2. They make stronger bonds with the clear coat (than wax/sealant).
  3. (maybe both of the above)
I am wondering about #2 above: do coatings make a stronger bond with the paint (clear coat).
  • Also, once a coating bonds to the clear coat, is it possible to tell the coating and the clear apart (under a microscope or some other tool)
Thanks to anyone who has some insight into the above (and also to anyone who might not have insight but read the above)

You are correct on both guesses.

They are more resistant to everything because of the substance they are made out of. At least "real" coatings. Tunch told me if the product with the name "coating" on it does not fully dry and harden then it's not a true coating. He said pour some of the product out into a small pile and let it stand for 2-3 days and then check to see if it's hardened. If not - it's not a true coating.

I don't understand how all real coatings "bond" or attach themselves to a surface but a real chemist that knows what they are doing? They know. :)

For we the unwashed masses - there's no way to know. Maybe someone like Amy Farrah Fowler could? (Mayim Bialik)

The BIG PICTURE is to find a product you like and after using it - wash your car carefully.
